Homemade Playdough
BY EARTHFIRST
One of the things that I really love about being a parent is reliving my childhood through the activities and games that I’ve played with my two children over the years.
Getting my hands dirty with playdough and finger painting, building cities with Legos, creating paper-mache pigs and hours of craft activities that involve sorting through our recycling to find interesting things to make.
My daughter Luna absolutely loves playdough, so today I thought I’d share with you a really easy recipe for home made playdough. The great thing about homemade playdough is that you know exactly what’s in it. If your child is allergic to wheat you can replace flour with rice flour.
And if you’re a kid at heart and feel like getting in touch with your creative side again, give it a go! Who said playdough is just for kids?
Homemade Playdough Recipe
- 2 cups flour (replace with rice flour if your child is allergic to wheat)
- 3 teaspoons cream of tartar
- 1/2 cup salt
- 2 cups water
- 2 teaspoons of oil
- 1 teaspoon of mint or orange or lavender extract (optional)
- A few drops of the colouring of your choice
In a large pan mix all the ingredients together (except for the food colouring), and stir constantly over medium heat for about 5 minutes or until all the moisture evaporates and a ball is formed. When its cooled slightly begin to knead the ball.
If you want to make a few different colours, just divide the batch into as many colours as you’d like to make and add the food colouring and knead until its all evenly spread.
You can even add glitter for a sparkly effect!
Let it cool completely before storing in airtight containers.
